It’s Less Flammable than Real Grass
Artificial turf is a safe, affordable alternative to natural grass. It’s subject to strict safety standards and as a result is less flammable than traditional lawns.
A laboratory test is used to determine the flammability of artificial turf when exposed to an ignition source. For this test, a methenamine tablet is placed on the material being tested and is then ignited using a lighted match. The flame is then left to self-extinguish. The turf passes if the charred portion of the tested material does not extend more than one inch.
The Synthetic Turf Council and the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission both require that eight different samples from the same product be tested. If seven of the eight samples pass, the product meets the standard.
